European Equities: The Benchmarks Stall at the Ceiling as Breadth Turns Negative
10 Jul 2026 · Weekly Signal-Based Market Review · Liam Boggan, CEO & Founder, Head of Research, Quantmatix

The major indices — the Euro Stoxx 50, Stoxx 600 and CAC 40 — are flashing Q Signal ceiling warnings even as they hold near their highs, and beneath them more shares are now falling than rising. Yet unlike the US, Europe still produced a handful of fresh top-conviction signals this week.
European equities closed the week net Declining — 1,112 of 2,367 scored names Advancing against 1,255 Declining (just 47%), average Q Score +1.09 — a weaker tape than the US, with the major benchmarks stalling right at the ceiling.
The positive read. Of the 82 Deep Positive Reversals in the book, the clusters sit in Industrials (14, led by Capital Goods), Financials (11, mostly diversified financials) and Real Estate (9, REITs turning up from washed-out levels), with more in Materials and Retailing. And unlike the US, Europe produced six fresh Top Quantmatix signals this week — its highest-conviction classification tier is still active — led by Kalmar, SSE and Incap. With Top Quantmatix present, the strongest signal reads come from that tier first, then TEVO, our Expected Value Outcome signal (WH Smith, KION Group and Mondi).
The negative read. The weakness is broad: fewer than half of all names are Advancing, and the major benchmarks — the Euro Stoxx 50, Stoxx 600 and CAC 40 — all carry Q Signal ceiling warnings, our earliest flag that a market is running into a top. Of the 45 negative Q Signals in the book, the heaviest clusters are in Financials (9), Industrials (6) and Consumer Discretionary (5). The 44 High Score Negative Reversals concentrate in Food, Beverage & Tobacco, Capital Goods and Diversified Financials — names such as Amundi, Aalberts and Lotus Bakeries turning down from stretched levels — while the FTSE 100 is outright Declining on a Negative Reversal. Energy, Information Technology and Materials are the weakest corners.

The tell is at the top of the market: the core Eurozone benchmarks — the Euro Stoxx 50 (+6.3), Stoxx 600 (+6.0) and CAC 40 (+4.6) — are all Advancing but carry Q Signal ceiling warnings, the model’s earliest sign a market is running into a top. The DAX and FTSE MIB have already turned Declining, and the FTSE 100 is Declining on an outright Negative Reversal. None of the benchmarks sits near support — each is still 3.7%–6.9% above it — so there is room to fall if the ceilings give way.

Closing Signal Summary
Europe is the weaker of the two markets this week — net Declining, with the major benchmarks stalling at the ceiling on Q Signal warnings — but, unlike the US, its highest-conviction tier is still active: six fresh Top Quantmatix signals, led by Kalmar (+17.5%), Incap (+9.2%) and SSE (+6.7%). The strongest expected-value signal reads beneath them are WH Smith (+20.6%), KION Group (+14.9%) and Mondi (+10.7%), and the constructive clusters are in Industrials, Financials and beaten-down Real Estate. On the cautionary side, the High Score Negative Reversals gather in Food & Beverage, Capital Goods and Diversified Financials — Amundi, Aalberts and Lotus Bakeries among them — and Energy, Information Technology and Materials remain the weakest corners. Net: a tiring, narrowing European market where the index-level ceilings argue for caution, while the highest-conviction signal tier remains active for names screened individually.
